Dairy Services
At FarmVets SouthWest our experienced team provide a complete and progressive service for our dairy clients. We are focused on helping you improve farm efficiency and animal health, to maximise herd productivity and sustainability for the future.
24 hour emergency service
We provide veterinary cover 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for all of your farm emergencies.
Health planning
Working with you and your team, we will help build a comprehensive health plan for your herd. We do this in line with your processor contract requirements as well as Red Tractor standards, ensuring that you are in the best position to meet your animal health, welfare and productivity targets. Working in coordination with your health plan, we will also help implement protocols on farm to assist key production areas.
Fertility management
Regular fertility routines play a crucial role in any reproductive strategy on farm. All of our team are experienced in pregnancy scanning, synchronisation, postpartum disease diagnosis and fertility treatments to aid reproductive success and herd efficiency. In addition, we offer bull fertility testing and semen analysis.
Reporting and analysis
Our team can assist in all relevant areas of farm health management through efficient screening, processing and reporting. We offer a range of tools and reports that you can utilise for monthly monitoring or benchmarking including a monthly health tracker report from DigiFarm which gives a headline view of key production areas on your farm.
Health status accreditation
Joining an accredited cattle health scheme helps you to monitor and eliminate disease from your herd. This will reduce economic losses from sick animals, increase productivity, improve biosecurity and increase the sale value of livestock which can be accredited as ‘disease free’. We can work with you to carry out annual tests and monitor disease status.
Cattle mobility
Lameness is a persistent challenge on dairy farms from a welfare and economic perspective. We offer a preventative approach to reduce problems and minimise financial loss. This includes regular mobility scoring and foot trimming [working alongside local recommended foot trimmers] to help keep your cows mobile, healthy and productive.                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Parasite control
Seasonal integrated parasite control planning is important for dairy herds due to increasing anthelmintic resistance in livestock. We can offer a full parasite control service including planning, sampling and treatment advice.
Laboratory
Our in-house laboratory offers quick results on haematology, milk sample cultures, faecal worm egg counts and parasites, allowing prompt, targeted treatment. We also have access to an extensive range of testing services through dedicated laboratories within our veterinary group.
Post mortems
In the unfortunate event of an unexplained death in the herd, we offer a post mortem service. Identifying cause of death is vital if preventative measures are to be implemented to protect the herd. Appropriate samples are collected for further diagnostics, if required, and interventions can be put in place if deemed necessary.
VetTech service
Our VetTech team work alongside our vets to deliver the important and time sensitive animal health jobs such as disbudding, youngstock routines and mobility scoring. Please ask us about more VetTech services.
Nutrition
We like to work closely with you and your feed supplier to ensure you are providing your herd with the all the nutrition needs they require to supply you with the product your processor needs.
Housing design
We use both disease prevalence data and practical assessments of your sheds to suggest improvements to ventilation, drainage, flooring, water trough and feed barrier space and cow resting areas. When designing new buildings, you will get the best results when you discuss your ideas with your entire advisory team, including your dedicated farm vet.
Breeding plans and genetic advice
As part of your tailored breeding plan, we can help you analyse your herd genetic profile alongside Clarifide genomic testing. This will help you identify your highest generic merit heifers to future proof the health and productivity of your herd.
Training
Working together to share knowledge is a vital way of increasing team performance and efficiency on farm. We offer a range of training courses from the practice including medicines, AI and foot trimming. [In addition to this, we can provide bespoke on farm training for your whole team on a topic of your choice.]
TB Advisory Service
We have a number of TBAS trained vets in practice who can deliver fully funded TB advice to farms in England with susceptible livestock. This can be advice over the phone or a full farm visit with tailored biosecurity plan.
Dairy focused meetings
Throughout the year we deliver a variety of meetings that offer practical advice and information on the latest developments in dairy production. We host talks from leading specialists and organise visits to local farms and businesses.
